2nd Generations 1982–1988

One of the most important cars in Chrysler’s recovery after the 1979 financial crisis. The 1982–1988 Chrysler LeBaron, the second-generation version based on the K-platform, marking Chrysler’s major shift to front-wheel drive and downsized cars in response to the energy crisis and changing market demands. The K-platform (front-wheel drive) was available in Sedan, coupe, convertible, wagon.

The most popular LeBaron models were the Convertible (very successful in the 1980s) and the Turbocharged versions available (2.2L Turbo I & II). Trim levels available were the Base, Medallion, Mark Cross Edition (luxury leather interior package), and the Town & Country Convertible (1983–1986): faux woodgrain sides, upscale trim.

Features (some optional) included Power windows, locks, mirrors, Digital dashboard (available mid-1980s), Leather seating (Mark Cross editions), AM/FM stereo with cassette or CB radio options, Wire wheel covers or alloy wheels, Woodgrain dash trim (simulated), Power convertible top (convertible only), and Cruise control, intermittent wipers, tilt wheel.

The 2.6L Mitsubishi engine was optional in early years and noted for smoother operation than Chrysler’s own 2.2.
