The Fourth generation BMW 3 Series was sold in the following body styles: sedan, coupé, convertible, wagon (marketed as “Touring”), and hatchback (marketed as “3 Series Compact”).

BMW 316i saloon

The BMW 316i saloon was initially supplied with a 4-cylinder petrol engine generating maximum power of 105 hp. The BMW 316i saloon was given a completely new engine with VALVETRONIC during the revision in 2001. BMW was the first manufacturer in the world to present fully variable adjustment for the stroke of the inlet valves with this innovation. The new engine generated maximum power of 115 hp.

The BMW 330d was something of a sensation when it celebrated its debut. The BMW high-tech diesel engine initially achieved maximum power of 184 hp and maximum torque of 390 Nm at 1,750 rpm. These values were later raised to 204 hp and an impressive 410 Nm between 1,500 and 3,250 rpm. The turbo lag often encountered was effectively avoided with Common Rail direct injection and an exhaust turbocharger with variable turbine geometry.
