The second generation of the BMW 3 series was launched in 1982. It was manufactured with an unparalleled diversity of models not yet seen at BMW and broke all previous sales records of the company to 1991 with more than 2.3 million units sold. The entry into this new model series gave customers the opportunity to purchase the most affordable version of the BMW 316 with a 4-cylinder carburettor engine and a choice of two or four doors. In autumn 1987, the range was supplemented by the 316i with catalytic-converter technology.

BMW 316i

The BMW 316i was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1987 for the model year 1988. It replaced the existing entry-level model BMW 316 with a carburettor engine. Alongside various measures designed to revise the model, the BMW 316i was given a new 1.8 litre injection engine with standard catalytic converter for the German market.

After the Type 316i, the BMW 318i provided the most economic entry into the BMW 3 Series. In 1984, a catalytic converter was available on request and a completely new 4-cylinder power unit was launched in 1987.

Anyone who was particularly keen on sportiness was able to order the BMW 318is with a 136 hp four-valve engine from 1989. Standard equipment for this model included supply with a catalytic converter.

BMW 320is

BMW supplied the 320is sport version specifically for the Italian market due to the high taxes levied on cars with a displacement of more than two litres. Customers purchased a two-door or four-door car effectively as a replacement for the more expensive BMW M3. The two-litre, four-valve engine also delivered dynamic driving performances.

The second generation of the BMW 3 Series was launched in 1982. It was manufactured with an unparalleled diversity of models not yet seen at BMW and broke all previous sales records of the company to 1991 with more than 2.3 million units sold. In 1985, the BMW 325i was launched as the new top model in this series. Initially, this was available as a two-seater or four-seater. The revised 6-cylinder engine was available from 1986 with catalytic converter technology and impressed customers with its silky-smooth performance, high torque and low fuel consumption.

BMW 325e

At the end of 1982 the 2nd generation of the BMW 3 Series appeared. An unprecedented variety of models was produced in rapid succession. With the BMW 325e a rarity was introduced in 1984. The ‘e’ stands for the Greek letter ‘eta’, the mathematical symbol for efficiency. From the ecological point of view, the comparatively limited power output of its 2.7-litre engine provided a high torque and a considerable increase in fuel economy.

Starting in 1985, a vehicle with a 6-cylinder diesel engine was included in the BMW 3 Series for the first time. The BMW 324d was powered by an 86 hp naturally aspirated diesel engine and continued the success story of the diesel engine debuted for the first time in 1983.

Starting in 1985 the BMW 324d provided a vehicle with a 6-cylinder diesel engine for the first time in the BMW 3 Series. The BMW 324td was launched as a more powerful version with exhaust turbocharger and generating 115 hp from 1987. This engine had been setting benchmarks in the diesel class since its debut with the BMW 5 Series in 1983.

1985 BMW 333i

BMW 333i

The BMW 333i was a special model in the second BMW 3 Series. It was developed in cooperation with BMW Motorsport GmbH and performance specialist ALPINA exclusively for the South African market. The sports car generating 197 hp accelerated the vehicle in the sprint to 100 km/h within just 7.4 seconds and impressed the 204 happy owners with exquisite Alpina components. There never was a BMW M3 for the South African market.
