BMW 309 (1934-1936)
The BMW 309 was a small car that was built by BMW in Eisenach between 1934 and 1936 as the successor to the 3/20 PS. The BMW 309 presented a low-cost alternative to Type 303 that had a 6-cylinder engine. Threatened the buying public for affordable small cars on the nature of the BMW 3/15 and 3/20 models that were discontinued by 1934. Thus one combined body and chassis of the 303 with the slightly uprated engine of the 3/20 PS AM 4 and received in the form of an economic type 309 small cars with superb handling and ansehnlichem (handsome) exterior.
The inline four-cylinder engine of the predecessor 3/20 was essentially retained with increased power rose to 22 hp and reached a top speed of 80 km/h. The 309 received a four-speed gearbox with center shift and rear-wheel drive. With its low frame, the design of the 309 corresponded to that of the six-cylinder 303 model introduced the previous year.
The 309 were delivered in 1934 as a sedan, convertible sedan, touring car, convertible with 4 seats and convertible with 2 seats each with 2 doors. In 1936, the four-cylinder model was discontinued without replacement. Total of 6000 units of the Type 309 were produced.
BMW 309 Limousine / Saloon
The front wheels were independently suspended on a transverse leaf spring (top) and wishbones (bottom), the rigid rear axle on semi-elliptical longitudinal leaf springs bolted to the axle bridge from below. All four wheels were fitted with drum brakes that were operated by cable.
