Lotus Carlton

The Lotus Carlton, also known as the Lotus Omega GSi in mainland Europe, is a high-performance sports sedan that was produced from 1990 to 1992. It was based on the Vauxhall Carlton (Opel Omega) and significantly modified by Lotus, which was owned by General Motors at the time.

Essentially the Carlton was completely stripped and rebuilt by Lotus, to become one of the quickest saloon cars in the world. Its specification was simply awesome. Power was from a 3.6-litre straight-six with 24 valves, two turbochargers, producing 377bhp and 419lb ft of torque. In magazine tests the Lotus Carlton pulled around 174mph; and would also run to 60mph in 5.2secs and 100mph in just 11.5secs.

The exterior featured aerodynamic enhancements, including a more aggressive front bumper, side skirts, and a rear spoiler. Inside, the car offered luxury features typical of a high-end sedan, such as leather seats, advanced (for the time) electronics, and premium materials.

The car’s high performance and speed sparked significant controversy in the UK, where it was criticized by some for being excessively fast and potentially dangerous in the wrong hands.
