BMW 316i saloon
The third model generation of the BMW 3 Series generation (E36) was initially launched on the market as a 4-series saloon in autumn 1990. The complete redevelopment was a significant improvement in all respects compared with its predecessor and won over an expectant BMW 3 Series customer base right from the start. The BMW 316i has traditionally been the entry-level model in the 3 Series and was included in the product range as a saloon until 1998, initially with 100 hp, and with 102 hp from 1993.

In 1991, a particularly sporty four-valve 4-cylinder engine made it debut in the 3 Series coupé as the BMW 318is with 140 hp. This 1.8 litre unit was also supplied in the BMW 3 Series saloon between 1996 and 1998.

Alongside the 4-cylinder BMW 316i and 318i, the significantly revised 6-cylinder models BMW 320i and 325i made their debut at the same time with four-valve engineering. The BMW 320i now generated power of 150 hp from 2 litres displacement and was intended to become the best-selling 6-cylinder.
